Service Life & Change Intervals (Technical Data)

The OM654 common-rail system operates at extremely high pressures – contaminated fuel is the #1 cause of injector failure. Mercedes-Benz has significantly revised the service schedule for OM654 engines.

Standard Recommended Interval:

• Every A and B Service – Mercedes-Benz now specifies a fuel filter change at both A and B servicing, versus only every 40,000 km for previous engines

• 20,000 miles (approx. 32,000 km) – Sprinter Schedule

• 20,000 km or 1 year – Industry standard

Critical Adjustment for Kampala (Severe Operating Conditions):
The operational climate (ambient temperatures 20°C–40°C), high humidity, stop-and-go urban traffic, and varying fuel quality classify as “Severe Duty” per MB Work Instructions. Under these conditions, the filter media loads with contaminants faster.

Recommended Replacement Interval under East African operating parameters:

• Maximum: 20,000 km or 12 months (whichever occurs first)

• Heavy urban use (taxis, fleets, daily city driving): 15,000 km or 10 months

• Poor fuel quality / high water content risk: 10,000 km recommended

Technical Notes for the Workshop

• Installation: This is a canister-style in-line filter. Ensure fuel lines are properly secured. Bleed the fuel system after installation to remove air from the high-pressure circuit.

• Water Separator: Models with water separator (A6540920200) require periodic draining. Do not bypass or ignore water-in-fuel warning lights.

• Radically Different Design: The OM654 fuel filter setup is completely different from OM642 and OM651 – do not attempt to use filters from older engines.

• Genuine vs. Aftermarket: Genuine MB fuel filters are manufactured to OEM specifications. Equivalent aftermarket brands with cross-reference include:
