Service Life & Change Intervals (Technical Data)
Standard Recommended Interval:
-
60,000 km or 4 years – Mercedes-Benz factory recommendation for most M271/M272/M273 engines
-
30,000 miles (approx. 48,000 km) – Recommended for M271 CGI (direct injection) engines
Critical Adjustment for Kampala (Severe Operating Conditions):
The operational climate (ambient temperatures 20°C–40°C), high humidity, stop-and-go urban traffic, and variable fuel quality classify as “Severe Duty” per MB Work Instructions. Platinum spark plugs in turbocharged and high-performance engines experience higher thermal stress and electrode wear under these conditions.
Recommended Replacement Interval under East African operating parameters:
-
Maximum: 40,000 km or 3 years (whichever occurs first)
-
Frequent short trips / heavy urban use: 30,000 km or 2 years
-
Turbocharged units (M271 Kompressor/CGI): 25,000 km recommended due to higher thermal stress
-
V8 units (M273): 25,000 km recommended
⚠️ Important: Spark plugs should be replaced as a complete set (4 plugs for 4-cylinder engines, 6 plugs for V6 engines, 8 plugs for V8 engines). Replacing only one or two plugs will cause uneven combustion and potential engine damage.
Failure Symptoms – When to Replace:
-
Engine misfires or rough idling
-
Check Engine Light illuminated
-
Hesitation or loss of power under acceleration
-
Poor fuel economy
-
Difficulty starting the engine

-
Engine air filter (per chassis application)
Technical Notes for the Workshop
-
Gap Setting: Factory pre-gapped. Do not attempt to adjust – platinum electrodes are fragile and can be damaged.
-
Torque Specification: 15 Nm – 23 Nm(refer to specific model service manual). Over-tightening can damage the cylinder head; under-tightening can cause heat transfer issues.
-
Anti-Seize: Not required on genuine Mercedes-Benz spark plugs.
-
Genuine vs. Aftermarket: Genuine MB A0041595803 is manufactured by Bosch and NGK to OEM specifications. Equivalent aftermarket brands:
-
NGK PLKR7B8E (94716)
-
