Application & Engine Fitment
MB 229.71 is the factory-fill specification for the current generation of Mercedes-Benz petrol engines equipped with gasoline particulate filters (GPF) and advanced emissions control systems. It is specifically formulated for modern, high-efficiency engines requiring ultra-low viscosity to reduce friction and maximize fuel economy.
Primary Petrol Applications (Engine Codes):
| Engine Code | Displacement | Configuration | Common Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| M260 | 2.0L Turbo | 4-Cylinder | A-Class (W177), CLA (C118), GLA (H247), GLB (X247) |
| M264 | 2.0L Turbo | 4-Cylinder | C-Class (W205), E-Class (W213), GLC (X253), GLE (V167) |
| M254 | 2.0L Turbo + EQ Boost | 4-Cylinder Mild Hybrid | Latest C-Class (W206), GLC (X254) |
| M256 | 3.0L Turbo + EQ Boost | Inline-6 Mild Hybrid | S-Class (W223), GLE (V167), GLS (X167), AMG 53 models |
Comprehensive Model List:
-
A-Class (W177): A220, A35 AMG
-
CLA (C118): CLA250, CLA35 AMG
-
GLA (H247): GLA250
-
GLB (X247): GLB250, GLB35 AMG
-
C-Class (W205/W206): C300, C350e
-
E-Class (W213): E350
-
GLC (X253/X254): GLC300
-
GLE (V167): GLE350
-
S-Class (W223): S450, S500 (M256)
⚠️ Important: MB 229.71 is designed for petrol engines primarily. While it may be suitable for some light-duty diesel applications, always verify with the vehicle’s VIN. Do not use in older petrol engines (pre-2018, M271/M272/M273) or diesel engines that require higher viscosity oils such as MB 229.51 or MB 229.52.
Service Life & Change Intervals (Technical Data)
Based on Mercedes-Benz Operating Fluids Guidelines (Sheet 223.2), the standard oil change interval under normal European/American highway conditions is 15,000 km to 25,000 km (depending on ASSYST calculation).
Critical Adjustment for Kampala (Severe Operating Conditions):
The operational climate (ambient temperatures 20°C–40°C), high humidity, stop-and-go urban traffic, and high dust loads classify as “Severe Duty” per MB Work Instructions. The ultra-low 0W-20 viscosity of MB 229.71 requires more frequent monitoring under these conditions.
Recommended Drain Interval under East African operating parameters:
-
Maximum: 10,000 km or 12 months (whichever occurs first).
-
Turbocharged petrol units (M260/M264/M256): Do not exceed 8,000 km under heavy urban taxi/fleet operation to prevent turbo coking and timing chain wear.
-
AMG models (A35, CLA35, GLB35): 7,000 km recommended due to higher thermal stress.
Technical Notes for the Workshop
-
Mixing: Miscible with other synthetic motor oils meeting ACEA C5, but to maintain the approved 229.71 status, a full flush is recommended before switching from MB 229.5 or MB 229.52.
-
Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) Protection: MB 229.71 oils are engineered to protect against LSPI in turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines.
-
Storage: Shelf life of 5 years in unopened, sealed packaging. Store below 40°C away from direct sunlight.
-
GPF Compatibility: Fully compatible with gasoline particulate filters found on Euro 6d and China 6b emissions vehicles.
